新潟・白根の地での金仏壇製造の歴史は江戸時代の元禄年間まで遡ります。宮大工の長井林右ェ門が京都から仏壇製作の技術をもたらしたのが始まりで、300年以上の伝統があります。新潟・白根仏壇は1980年（昭和55）に通商産業大臣により伝統的工芸品の指定を受けました。分業制で、木地宮殿師、塗り箔押し師、彫刻師、蒔絵師、金具師等の手を経て完成されます。その木地部門の伝統工芸士として認められました。
